Questions About Your Appointment
We understand your first visit can be overwhelming, especially when bringing a child or an infant. We want to make your visit as easy and worry-free as possible. Contact our Waltham, MA, dental office if you have any additional questions before your appointment.
What do I need to bring to the first dental appointment?
Please print out the required forms for your first appointment. We will need a list of recent prescription medications your child is taking and your dental insurance card or number to verify your eligibility. It is also helpful to bring any dental x-rays taken in the last three years or bitewing x-rays taken within the past year.
How long do most appointments last?
Most appointments range from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the treatment. Our pediatric dentists can meet all your child's oral health needs. Unlike other dentists, pediatric dentists attend further training after dental school to ensure they can handle all children's dental issues. From toddlers who need a quick teeth cleaning to teens who need a custom-fitted mouthguard, our dentists use gentle techniques to make your child feel safe and comfortable during their entire visit, whether long or short.
Are parents allowed in the dental operatories during treatment?
This depends on the child's age and maturity. Many kids do very well without parents in the room during dental treatment. Allowing our pediatric dentists to have one-on-one interactions with the child gives the patient a better chance of having a positive dental experience. However, some children will need a parent for "moral support." We allow parents in the hygiene rooms at the child’s initial exam appointment. We also require a parent to be present during Nitrous Oxide treatment.
What Will My Insurance Cover And How Much Will I Be Responsible For?

After your initial visit, we will prepare an estimate based on your treatment needs and insurance plan. This number is only an estimate but will be very close to the actual amount.

Do you use silver (mercury) filling material?
No. We at Children's Dental of Waltham use only tooth-colored (composite) filling material. Unlike dental sealant, which only lasts up to a year, our composite fillings can last almost a decade.
How old should my child be to come to the dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit when the first tooth comes in and no later than their first birthday.
